Feast is a concept for an Augment Reality application that creates and fosters communities by sharing leftover food.

March 2017

Project was done as a part of team of 4 people, I was the Team Leader

Feast is a community food sharing application. It is a way to intelligently solve the problem of domestic food waste and enable interaction between people living in the same regional communities.

Since the dawn of the ICT revolution technology has driven our society in myriad of ways, it has deeply impacted our personal and private lives. Quite often when a new technology is introduced its impact on society is not considered. Technology driven innovation effectively forgets the deep seated impact that happens to our society.

Feast is not just a food sharing application because food is not just for consumption. Since humanity started, the food table has been a place for bonding and

It started off as a problem to curb food waste in our 3rd Semester of Design Masters. Food waste especially house-hold food waste became our focus during the course of the project. One of our inspirations was a speculative design concept by Phillips called the Microbial Home. A microbial home was was essentially a closed eco-system where the wastes from one area of the house was used a resource for another eg. Organic waste was used to create biogas methane which was then used in the stove for cooking.

This gave us the idea of a Microbial Cluster.

Currently the domestic home consumption is very segregated, as shown below. But what if we combine the resources together to form combined clusters in geographical proximity.

Now that we knew what we had to do, we needed to find a way on how to do it. We started doing wire-frame concepts for the User Interface

This concept was based on the users social network. Why two different people have to go the supermarket when 1 person can carry the same amount? People who are home can reach “local friends” who are able to buy some products for them if they want.

This concept focuses on the fact that people are willing to show the creations they have baked. The concept is a social platform where food can be offered. Interested people can view the nice images of the food, buy it and review the baker.

The last pre concept focuses on sharing information about the food of a person. In the fridge on a special shelf are several cameras attached. When something is placed on this shelf, the system instantly recognizes it and makes a picture. The picture will be send to the cloud, and this will allow people to buy this product or leftover

Proximity Based Approximation
The layout of the food on the table is presented according to proximity based approximation. The table is a real map of your neighbor hood. Separated left corner is the food you store and this corner represents you on the map. The closer food to your corner is closer to your home as distance. You can adjust the distance you would like to see on the table for example 1 kilometer around you or 5 kilometers around you. If we say that you are in the center, you are able to see one part of the map, therefore you need to swipe to see the other parts or other food which is in the system.

Your Storage
The left corner seperated by a line is your food you have. We are assuming all the storage you have will be scanned in the future. You are able to see all the food you have, so you don’t need to check everywhere to see what you have.

Search

You can search according to type of food, distance, price, ingredients and users in the system
